Head of School

Avi Baran Munro, Ed.M., is an educator with over 28 years of experience working with children, teens, and teachers in both secular and Jewish education.  She is currently in her fifth year as Head of School at Community Day, Pittsburgh’s K-8 Solomon Schechter Day School.

Avi spent six years as Curriculum Coordinator and Head of Lower School at Community Day School.  She has taught in the Sociology Department at Carlow University  and she taught education courses and supervised student teachers for nearly ten years at the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Instruction and Learning.

At the Jewish Education Institute (now the Agency for Jewish Learning),  Pittsburgh’s Central Agency for Jewish Education, she was Teacher Development Coordinator and she created and taught the Mekorot Course, a pedagogy and practice course for teachers in Jewish education.  As Teacher Development Coordinator she coached individual teachers in both day and supplementary schools.

Avi has conducted dozens of workshops and inservice courses for educators from preschool through high school on a wide range of topics.

In 2008, Avi received the Doris and Leonard H. Rudolph Jewish Communal Professional Award which recognizes the exceptional personal and professional commitment of a Jewish communal professional employed by the UJF or one of its partner agencies.

Ms. Baran Munro is a graduate of Brown University, Harvard Graduate School of Education, and the University of California, San Diego.  She also holds Pennsylvania State certification in Secondary English.  In preparation for her transition to Head of School, she attended the NAIS New Head’s Institute in the summer of 2004.

As a graduate of the very first Solomon Schechter Day School, and as a parent of four children who attended Community Day, she is deeply committed to Jewish education.
