Educational Excellence
Community Day School believes our philosophy of differentiated instruction is crucial to our academic success. We know that children learn at different rates, with different styles, building on diverse talents. Differentiated instruction is the practice of adjusting instruction to the needs of students in order to increase learning. It means starting where the kids are, rather than adopting a standardized approach to teaching that presumes that all learners of a given age or grade are essentially alike. Thus, differentiated instruction is “responsive” teaching rather than “one-size-fits-all” teaching. Curriculum is no longer defined in terms of what a teacher will teach. Instead it is defined in terms of what a student will be able to demonstrate.
Community Day School students experience a well-rounded, academically challenging, and enriched education in both secular and Hebrew/Judaic subjects. In addition to receiving a firm foundation in language arts and mathematics, children explore science and social studies concepts throughout their time at the school. Students finish Algebra by 8th grade, and some progress to Geometry and beyond. Research skills are emphasized in Middle School Language Arts and Social Studies. Beginning in 7th grade, students may also elect to take Spanish, allowing them to enter high school as second year Spanish students.
