Passport to Israel/ 8th Grade Israel Trip
One of the highlights of the Community Day experience is the 8th grade trip to Israel. We strongly encourage all of our 8th graders to take the trip, regardless of financial ability. In order to ease the burden for families we are partnering with the United Jewish Federation (UJF) and the Agency for Jewish Learning (AJL) to actively promote the Passport to Israel program.
How it works:
- Open a Passport to Israel account at PNC Bank. Return the forms to: AJL-Attn: Amy Karp, 2740 Beechwood Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15217 This is your money!
- Contribute $20 per month ($200 per year must be contributed for financial aid).
- Receive $100 match per year from the Sholom Comay Family Endowment Fund of the UJF for a trip to Israel.
If you start saving when your child becomes eligible in 1st grade, you will have $2,400 available for your child's trip to Israel in 8th grade. Nowhere else can you earn a return of 50% on your money. Remember, this is your money! The cost of the trip to our 8th grade class of 2007 was $2,250 per child. Those that took advantage of this program had enough money to pay for the trip, as well as spending money.
Each year, the cost of plane tickets, food, and accommodations increases. Therefore, financial assistance will be available to the extent that future costs exceed $2,400. However, the financial assistance will only be available if you have done your part by participating in the Passport to Israel program. Effective as of the 2007-2008 school year, we are requiring all families to enroll their children in this program if they wish to apply for financial assistance for the 8th grade trip to Israel.
