Community Day School Love the learning, Live the Values

Head of School Message

You Rocked It For CDS!
Avi Baran Munro, Ed.M.

It might have been cold outside, but 400 people generated a lot of good heat rocking the night away at our CDS Rock-n-Roll Annual Party on January 25 at Nova Place on the North Side.

The party was a celebration of CDS and gave us the perfect platform to honor Dr. E. Joseph Charny (Community Leadership Award), Duquesne University School Psychology Professor Kara McGoey, Ph.D. (Volunteer of the Year), and CDS Head of Hebrew and Jewish Studies Tzippy Mazer (Lifetime Achievement Award).

All of our honorees share a big passion for CDS. You can watch a tribute to these extraordinary leaders here, with additional messages of love and support for Tzippy Mazer in this video.

Our party featured a silent auction to raise funds for the CDS Class of 2020 Israel trip, as well as a luxury raffle with concert, gift card, and fine spirits baskets.

Food by Creative Kosher included three vendor stations with tacos, nachos, and sliders, all concert-style, and for dessert, guests enjoyed Bella Christie and Lil Z's Fry Daddy station with donuts and other delicious treats. Libations included Southern Tier Rock Band and He'brew Beer, and party-goers could buy "concert tees" in the merch booth.

A Gene Simmons look-alike made a special guest appearance, and the high school rock band HOA performed to kick off the night before DJ Sosa heated up the dance party.

Guests came dressed in their concert finest, including a full appearance by KISS and plenty of ripped jeans, rock wigs, and eyeliner.

Who whips up all this fun? We have a cosmically creative volunteer committee that come together nearly a year in advance to concoct the special touches that make our parties so memorable!

Special thanks to party planner Margie Stang and to these endlessly imaginative volunteers: Rachel Cravotta, Jay Dworin, Jennifer Ferris-Glick, Dan Gelman, Jan Glick, Beth Jacobs, Ed Mistler, Hayley Perlow, and Rita Rabin.

And ENORMOUS thanks to our own Director of Institutional Advancement and Donor Relations Jenny Jones, who’s already cooking up some exciting plans for next year. SAVE THE DATE FOR JANUARY 30, 2021!

We are so grateful to all of honorees, sponsors, guests, staff, board, and volunteers for making this extraordinary evening possible and for supporting our mission to deliver a joyful, innovative education that empowers children to become accomplished learners and compassionate upstanders who are committed to Jewish life and to creating a better world.

Not Throwing Away Our Shot

What feels nothing short of an obvious miracle is that 100% of our CDS faculty and staff are now fully vaccinated for COVID-19, have a first dose of vaccine already, or have a vaccine appointment scheduled in the next few days.

We are all mindful that the uncertainty and anxiety about the coronavirus and the illness it causes, COVID-19, have continued to escalate this week. Here's an update on our emergency planning process at Community Day School and steps we should all be taking in the interest of public health.

Choose To Accept This Mission

Our mission at CDS is to deliver a joyful, innovative education that empowers children to become accomplished learners and compassionate upstanders who are committed to Jewish life and to creating a better world. Are you with us?

Thanksgiving donation graphic

We’re planning for a supercharged Thanksgiving here at CDS. Why? Because we just found out that we have the opportunity to raise $250,000 in the next two weeks that will immediately go to strengthen our school and could result in PA tax credits for you!

Middle School Torah reading

Something big is happening here at Community Day School, and we are now in search of the right Head of Jewish Life and Learning to nurture and inspire the beautiful community we are today and the even more energized and innovative community we aspire to become.

One Year Later: Remember, Repair, Together

The end of October will never be as it was before. And neither will we. No matter where we were on October 27, 2018, everything that came before and everything that followed and will follow, is punctuated by this enormous, unforgettable, and irreparable tear in the fabric of our lives.

A Different Kind of Annual Appeal

Yom Kippur provides us with a sacred opportunity to ask forgiveness directly from people who we might have offended over the course of the year.
