Volunteer Opportunities

Throughout our rich history spanning more than 40 years, Community Day School has relied on the generosity of our community to ensure that we achieve our mission. There are countless ways to make a difference at CDS. You can join our Parent Association or Grandparent Association; help enhance our beautiful campus as a member of our Green Team; read a story to Pre-K or kindergarten students; participate in a phone-a-thon; chaperone a field trip; volunteer in our front office, join the Sports Committee; pack Purim baskets, and much more!

For more information, please contact Admission Director Sarah DeWitt at 412-521-1100, Ext. 2114 or sdewitt@comday.org.

Volunteer Clearances Policy

In October 2014, the PA Legislature adopted Act 153 of 2014 as an amendment to a section of the Child Protective Services Law requiring background checks for volunteers. Under this law, any unpaid volunteer who is individually responsible for the welfare of one or more children―or has direct contact with children―must complete required clearances.

A volunteer is viewed as having direct contact with children if they “provide care, supervision, guidance, or control of children and have routine interaction with children.” Routine interaction is defined as “regular and repeated contact that is integral to a person’s volunteer responsibilities.” Examples of direct contact might include: chaperoning a field trip or dance; routinely helping in the classroom; helping students make book fair selections; carpooling to a sports event; tutoring; or assisting coaching staff. Clearances would not be required to attend school events and performances as a spectator or to be a guest speaker or presenter.

Any adult volunteer (parents, grandparents, special friends, etc.) who meets the above requirements must obtain clearances and provide them to Community Day School under our new Clearance Policy for Volunteers. For practical purposes, we strongly recommend that ALL parents who may be volunteering obtain the necessary clearances and submit them together so that they are free to participate in any classroom or school event.

At CDS, our teachers know most of the students (not just their own), as well as their siblings, parents, and grandparents. How many schools can say that? My children love their teachers and feel loved in return. That matters a lot to us. And that's what distinguishes our school: We not only educate students, we raise them.
