Teacher works in small group setting to provide academic support

We have a staff of learning specialists who work closely with classroom teachers, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, and parents to support students with their academic work.

Our learning specialists provide push-in support to students within the classroom. They work closely with the classroom teachers in a co-teaching model and provide targeted strategy instruction. When educationally appropriate, “pull out” instruction is also provided. The learning specialists focus their work with students on the following areas:

  •  Acceleration and enrichment for students with giftedness or advanced abilities
  • Remediation in reading instruction including decoding, fluency, and comprehension
  • Strategy instruction in written language skills
  • Strategy instruction in organizational and study skills
  • Math remediation

The learning specialists develop education plans for advanced academics or remedial support. These individualized plans guide teachers to provide a classroom environment with student supports that  can include accommodations in the areas of instruction, organization, focus/attention, behavior management, assessment, and assistive technology.  We also believe that parents are an integral part of our team to help define student needs and supports.
