Learning and Student Services
We have a staff of learning specialists who work closely with classroom teachers, the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, and parents to support students with their academic work.
Our learning specialists provide push-in support to students within the classroom. They work closely with the classroom teachers in a co-teaching model and provide targeted strategy instruction. When educationally appropriate, “pull out” instruction is also provided. The learning specialists focus their work with students on the following areas:
- Acceleration and enrichment for students with giftedness or advanced abilities
- Remediation in reading instruction including decoding, fluency, and comprehension
- Strategy instruction in written language skills
- Strategy instruction in organizational and study skills
- Math remediation
The learning specialists develop education plans for advanced academics or remedial support. These individualized plans guide teachers to provide a classroom environment with student supports that can include accommodations in the areas of instruction, organization, focus/attention, behavior management, assessment, and assistive technology. We also believe that parents are an integral part of our team to help define student needs and supports.
Yad b'Yad Program
Through the Yad b'Yad (Hand in Hand) partnership with Jewish Family and Community Service of Pittsburgh, CDS students are able to receive school-based psychological services and socio-emotional support as needed from trained counselors and social workers.
Their work includes teacher consultations, student observation, modeling of effective behavioral interventions and small group work, and consultations with students and parents on a case-by-case basis.
Funding for this program comes from the Jewish Community Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.
